A Dynamical Systems Approach to Transition State Theory

DS TST

S. Wiggins, H. Waalkens, A. Burbanks

What do escaping asteroids and reacting enzymes have in common? Transformations such as these have "reaction-type" dynamics and are regulated by "transition states". We study systems in which the "reactants" and the "products" correspond to regions of phase space that are separated by "dividing surfaces". By studing the properties of each dividing surface (determined by the relevant transition state) we can uncover the dynamics that govern the reaction.
